The cabinet under your kitchen sink usually fails for one reason: a drain pipe sits in the middle of the only shelf-shaped space you have. So it becomes a dumping ground — half-empty sprays, a bucket, five sponges, and the bag of bags. This guide walks through the fix in the order that actually works, instead of buying a bin and hoping.
Empty it and sort by task, not by category
Take everything out. Group it by the job you're doing: dish duty, surface cleaning, floors, spares. People fail at "all bottles together" systems because they never reach for a bottle — they reach for a task. If you have three of anything, keep one under the sink and move the rest to a closet.
Measure around the pipe, not the cabinet
Interior width, interior depth, and the height from the cabinet floor to the lowest point of the P-trap. That last number is the one that decides everything. Write all three down before you shop, because a rack that "fits the cabinet" can still land straight on the trap.
Build in two levels
The floor of the cabinet is prime real estate for tall items — a spray bottle, dish soap refill, a small bucket. The air above the pipe is wasted unless you put a shelf there.
