Under Sink

Almost every under-sink cabinet has the same problem: a drain pipe drops through the middle, and whatever shelf you put in has to work around it. Most don't. They sit flat, the pipe cuts the depth in half, and the back corner quietly turns into the place where old sponges go to die.

Everything on this page is built around that pipe instead of pretending it isn't there. Baskets that slide past it, racks that hang on the inside of the cabinet door, one bundle if you'd rather not think about it twice.

Measure two numbers before you buy anything

Not the brand. Not the color. Two measurements decide whether a piece fits or comes back in a box:

  • Clear width, wall to wall, at the height where the shelf will sit. Door hinges and the cabinet frame eat an inch or two you didn't count.
  • Floor to the bottom of the pipe — not to the sink basin, not to the top of the cabinet. The pipe sits lower than you think, and it's what your tallest bottle actually has to clear.

If you'd rather watch someone do it with a tape measure in frame, here's the walkthrough. It takes two minutes and it's the difference between one order and two.

What actually fits around a garbage disposal

A disposal doesn't just take up floor space — it takes headroom on one side. The fix is almost always the same: put the short basket on the disposal side, the taller pull-out on the open side, and stop trying to run one long shelf wall to wall. We broke down which pieces clear a disposal and which don't.

If the cabinet smells, organize it second

This is the one people get backwards. A musty under-sink cabinet is usually a slow leak or condensation, not clutter. Put shelves in first and you'll be wiping the same shelf every month. Start with the damp, then buy storage — that post is the most-read thing on this site for a reason.

Renting? Nothing here needs a drill

The door hangers and the floor-standing baskets leave no holes at all. When you move out, you take them with you and the cabinet looks exactly like it did on day one. The renter's version of this setup is a door rack plus one basket, and that's genuinely enough for a one-bedroom.

Small kitchen, narrow cabinet

Under 15 inches of clear width, a pull-out won't work — the rails need room to extend. Go with a door-back hanger and stack vertically instead of sideways. Sizes that fit a small kitchen, and how to pick a size without guessing.

Three setups. Pick the closest one.

  • Bottles and sprays everywhere — the two-pack pull-out organizer. Everything comes out on one tray instead of you kneeling on the floor moving six bottles to reach the seventh.
  • Pots, pans, lids — the pot organizer with a lid rack. Lids stand up, which is the only thing that stops them from becoming a pile.
  • Nothing on the floor, all on the door — the no-drill door back hanger. Best when the cabinet floor is taken up by the pipe.
  • Don't want to decide — the 3-piece starter set covers a normal cabinet in one order.

Still sorting out what you actually own down there? Sort your cleaning supplies by category first — the storage picks itself after that.

Questions people ask before ordering

Do I need to drill into the cabinet?

No. The door hangers hang off the cabinet door itself and the pull-out baskets sit on the cabinet floor. Nothing screws into the cabinet, which is the main reason renters end up with these.

Will a pull-out basket fit around the drain pipe?

Depends on where the pipe sits, not on the basket. Measure the clear width from the left wall to the pipe, and from the pipe to the right wall. If one side is wider than the basket, it goes on that side and slides past the pipe. Most cabinets fail because people measure the whole cabinet and forget the pipe splits it in two.

My cabinet has a garbage disposal under it. Is there still room?

Usually yes, but the disposal eats the height on one side. Measure floor to the bottom of the disposal, not to the pipe. The short baskets clear it; the tall ones do not.

Can I use these in a bathroom vanity?

Yes. A vanity has the same P-trap setup as a kitchen sink, only smaller. The narrower pieces are the ones that fit there.

Will the steel rust in a damp cabinet?

Stainless holds up better in a wet cabinet than coated steel does, but neither one likes standing water. If your cabinet is already damp enough to smell, fix that first — a shelf is not going to solve it.

What if it doesn't fit when it arrives?

Then send it back. Our return policy is on the refund policy page, and the two measurements above are the whole reason returns happen.
