How to Choose a Spice Rack for a Small Kitchen (Before You Waste $25)

In a small kitchen, counter and cabinet space is the most fought-over real estate you own, so the wrong spice rack wastes it twice — once on the wrong shape, once when you return it. The order is always the same: measure, then match. Do this before you spend a dollar.

Step 1 — measure the counter and the air above it

Write down two numbers. First, the clear counter width you can spare near the stove — not the whole counter, just the stretch your hand reaches while cooking. Second, the height from counter to the bottom of the cabinet above it. That second number is what kills a 3-tier rack you didn't measure for. Most small kitchens have 10–14 inches of clear height; that decides tier count immediately.

Step 2 — visible or hidden?

If you cook with spices daily and have the counter room, a 2-tier countertop rack is the grab-and-go winner — eye level, no bending, no wet-hand drawer pulls. If the counter is genuinely full, a tiered drawer insert or a wall-mounted strip keeps spices off the surface entirely. Pick by where your hands already go, not by which photo you liked.

Step 3 — material for the splash

Near the stove or sink, stainless earns its keep: it wipes clean and doesn't slide or stain. Bamboo is lovely on a dry counter; thin plastic is the one you replace. Match the material to how hard that spot works, and you won't be shopping again in six months.
